This month, the 8th issue of Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s 10th season was a Halloween-themed story that brought our beloved scoobies back to Sunnydale! For those of you who haven’t read the comic book continuation, or are maybe just behind on the series, this issue is designed as a perfect jumping-on point for new readers and avid Buffy fans. The story has Buffy & company returning to the massive pit formerly known as Sunnydale in order to locate the essential Vampyr book, now used to write the rules of magic while dealing with new and old conflicts.

The creative team of Christos Gage (writer) and Rebekah Isaacs (artist) began this season strongly, yet with more time have really hit their stride before the midway point of the season. Gage manages to plug pivotal moments from the show and events transpired since, while still capturing the Buffy lingo Joss Whedon fans have become accustomed to. This issue successfully shows major transitions in the characters from the show’s run, which has always been an important quality to the Buffyverse. For myself and many readers, the highlight of this specific issue comes from a one-on-one conversation between Buffy and Spike (Team Spuffy!) where they confront regrets on past problems with their relationship while acknowledging the faults in ways they dealt with their relationship, and even showing forgiveness. Of course the conversation is cut short on an awkward misunderstanding, but for now it more than indicated a real connection we know lies dormant for now. (Can we have it soon though?)

Rebekah Isaacs captures the likeness of certain characters extremely well, and makes the book visually pleasing which only adds to the book’s successful direction thus far from expressions, surroundings, and even basic clothing. When you assume you know what the outcome of this particular story will be, a quick curveball ending panel suggests a complete shocker that fans will be anxiously awaiting the result of. As for what it is you’ll have to read for yourself, but let’s just say if it’s not a misdirect this could change a few characters’ lives tremendously.

This is definitely a must-read issue, so it would be a smart idea to pick it up from your local comic book store while still available and catch up with your favorite Vampire Slayer!
